Message what you described is not really understeer it sounds like worn suspension components with alignment settings that are off resulting in a vauge front end.

get new tires, an alignment and if that doesnt help the problem a great deal make sure to have them look at the suspension components for any obvious sources of the the symptoms you described here and replace/repair as needed.

understeer would be better described as the front end loosing traction as you turn in, resulting in the car not following the steering inputs you are giving it. and yes most any female is going to scream and ask to get out of the car if you show them what understeer/oversteer feels like, all they know is your driving like an idiot trying to kill both of you and they want out. :) if your car was truly suffering from understeer im sure she would have felt it in the passensger seat and hitchhiked home.
